Buke-cha 武家茶

Step into buke-cha, the tea ceremony tradition for Japan's warrior class — the samurai. Rooted in discipline, presence, and quiet strength, buke-cha traces back to Furuta Oribe, a direct student of the merchant-born tea master Sen-no-Rikyu, who shaped tea practice for the warrior class rather than the court or merchant circles that gave rise to today's better-known schools.

Why buke-cha is special

Buke-cha took its formal shape as generations of tea masters, beginning with Oribe, served in succession as official tea instructors to the Tokugawa shoguns themselves. Unlike the more ornate traditions of court and merchant circles, buke-cha carries the practical bearing of the warrior: every movement considered, nothing performative. It's tea stripped to its essential purpose, stillness earned through discipline and built on mutual respect.

Step into buke-cha, the tea ceremony tradition of the Japanese warrior class, the samurai. This is a practice rooted in discipline, presence, and quiet strength.

This is a practice we bring to Hawaii through direct training in the Sekishū-ryū lineage under the 17th generation. Tajima Botanica is one of the only places outside Japan where buke-cha ceremony is experienced.

What to expect

Your morning begins with the ceremony itself, guided through each deliberate movement and moment of stillness. From there, we move into a tasting of organic matcha and loose leaf teas, an opportunity to experience the full range of what we source from Kyoto in traditional Asahiyaki pottery handmade in Uji.

Held in small groups of up to six, each session is intimate. Take the space you need to settle into the practice and reach your state of tranquility.
