Step into buke-cha, the tea ceremony tradition of the samurai. This is a practice rooted in discipline, presence, and quiet strength, distinct from the more familiar courtly forms of chanoyu.
Why buke-cha is special
Buke-cha emerged within the warrior class of the Tokugawa era, shaped by samurai who studied tea as part of their training in self-discipline and refinement. Unlike the more ornate, formalized tea traditions that developed in court and merchant circles, buke-cha carries the practical bearing of the warrior; every movement considered, nothing performative. It's tea stripped to its essential purpose: stillness earned through discipline and built on mutual respect.
This is a practice we bring to Hawaii through direct training in the Sekishū-ryū lineage under the 17th generation. Tajima Botanica is one of the only places outside Japan where buke-cha ceremony is experienced.
What to expect
Your morning begins with the ceremony itself, guided through each deliberate movement and moment of stillness. From there, we move into a tasting of organic matcha and loose leaf teas, an opportunity to experience the full range of what we source from Kyoto in traditional Asahiyaki pottery handmade in Uji.
Held in small groups of up to six, each session is intimate. Take the space you need to settle into the practice and reach your state of tranquility.
